Our in-depth review
The aesthetic benchmark
Midjourney remains the tool to beat on pure image quality. Its output frequently looks like the work of a professional concept artist or photographer, with a command of cinematic lighting, texture and composition that rivals struggle to match. The v8.1 generation is its fastest and highest-resolution yet, producing crisp 2K images natively. For agencies, designers and brands where the visual impact is the point, it is still the first choice.
Strengths
Best-in-class artistic quality and a strong, consistent house aesthetic are the headline. The web app is now the default home (Discord is optional), which removes the old barrier to entry, and the community and reference material around it are vast. For mood boards, campaign concepts and striking hero imagery, few tools come close to the finish Midjourney produces.
Limitations
There is no free tier — it is paid only. Midjourney still rewards deliberate prompt craft more than GPT Image 2, so getting exactly the picture in your head takes practice. Fine editing controls are limited compared with Stable Diffusion, text rendering trails OpenAI's model, and generations can slow down at peak times.
UK data and GDPR
This is the weakest data posture in our directory, and UK businesses should take note. Midjourney offers no formal data processing agreement, images are stored on its US servers, and on lower tiers your generations are public in the community feed by default. Never prompt with personal data or identifiable real people, and check the current licensing terms before using output commercially.
