Claude is Anthropic's flagship assistant, and among UK professionals it has earned a reputation for the quality and restraint of its prose. Where some models pad answers with filler and over-egged enthusiasm, Claude writes in a measured, intelligent cadence and largely avoids the tell-tale 'AI vocabulary' (delve, tapestry, testament) that marks machine-written copy. Its 200K-token context window means you can paste an entire contract, research pack or hour-long meeting transcript and ask for a structured summary without chopping it into pieces first.
Where it pulls ahead
Two things stand out in our testing. First, long-document work: Claude is the model we reach for when a task involves reading a lot before writing a little — synthesising a 50-page PDF into a brief, or comparing three versions of a policy. Second, careful instruction-following: it tends to do what you actually asked rather than what it guessed you meant, and it is more willing than most to say it is unsure rather than inventing an answer. For coding, the Artifacts feature renders working snippets beside the chat, which is handy for quick prototypes.
The trade-offs
Claude is not a complete productivity suite. Its plugin and integration ecosystem is far smaller than ChatGPT's, real-time web access is limited compared with Perplexity, and there is no team workspace with brand-voice training of the sort Jasper offers marketers. It can also err on the side of caution, occasionally declining requests that are perfectly reasonable. If you want one tool that also generates images and runs spreadsheets, ChatGPT is the broader choice.
UK data and GDPR
Anthropic's privacy default is a genuine selling point: it does not use your conversations to train its models unless you explicitly opt in, which is a meaningful step above the default consumer ChatGPT setting. A data processing agreement is available. The caveat for regulated UK sectors is data residency — standard plans process data in the US on Anthropic's AWS infrastructure, with no UK or EU residency option, so finance, health and public-sector teams handling personal data should weigh that before rolling it out widely.
